The last two road games have not been kind to the New England Patriots. They looked bad in Jacksonville and lost 31-20 in Week 2, and they looked downright awful in Detroit – and lost 26-10 in Week 3.

It was stunning.

“The Pats just looked flat,” MMQB & Sports Illustrated writer Jonathan Jones said on Ferrall on the Bench. “They looked like they had no energy. It looked like they didn’t want to play.”

The Patriots opened the game with three 3-and-outs, as Tom Brady finished 14-of-26 for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Only four of his completions were to wide receivers; three went to Cris Hogan, and one went to Cordarrelle Patterson.

The rest? Rob Gronkowski and running backs.

“This offense, clearly Brady just doesn’t have enough weapons,” Jones said. “ If they’re going to double Gronk, he has to be able to throw it to someone else. That’s why I was surprised that Josh Gordon was inactive. If nothing else, have him out there on the field for 10-12 snaps. At least make the defense account for him. You throw his way one time. If it’s an incompletion, so what? At leads you’ve shown the threat of Josh Gordon on the field. I wasn’t surprised by the end result – the Lions winning – but how they won and how they beat the Patriots was definitely surprising.”

The Patriots (1-2) play their next three games at home, beginning with Miami (3-0) this Sunday.

“We really can’t imagine the New England Patriots dropping three straight,” Jones said. “Is this the year that the Patriots are just actually bad? It does have to happen at some point. We can’t imagine it happens with both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick at the helm, but you have to think that they’re going to right the ship and get an AFC East win against a team that they know they can beat.”

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.
