Ohio State Fans Wanted Zach Smith Gone A Long Time Ago

Zach Smith was on Ohio State's staff the longest yet made the least amount of money. "I think there's a reason for that," Ari Wasserman said

Zach Smith is no longer a member of Ohio State’s coaching staff, and many Ohio State fans are probably happy about that – not only because of domestic-violence allegations levied against him, but also because of, well, his coaching ability.

“He’s been on the staff longer than everybody else. He was the only coach remaining coming into this year that was on the inaugural 2012 staff, and he made the least mount of money. I think there’s a reason for that,” The Athletic Ohio State beat writer Ari Wasserman said on Taz & The Moose. “Urban Meyer was a receivers coach when he was an assistant. He coaches that position. I think (Smith) was the most replaceable assistant on the staff coming into this year, and I think that he was getting a lot of flak in general for the lack of development for the wide receivers this year.”

Smith often responded to that flak in a less-than-productive way.

“He flew off the handle a lot on Twitter and got into debate and confrontations with people he didn’t need to do – and sometimes it made him look bad,” Wasserman said. “So in terms of just his general (ability and demeanor), I think that Ohio State fans in general probably were getting sick of him before this happened.”

Wasserman remains stunned that Urban Meyer reportedly stood by someone who had so little impact on the program’s success. And in the end, it may cost him his job.

When might Ohio State make a decision on Meyer?

“Half of me thinks it’s going to be two weeks, and part of me thinks it’ll be by Tuesday,” Wasserman said. “I think the reason why their put him on paid administrative leave was to buy some time to make sure they get everything right. I don’t know right now if they are investigating and trying to come up with any plausible way to keep Urban employed or if they’re working on a severance package right now. I have no idea what they’re doing.

“Given that Ohio State’s playing Oregon State in four weeks, I think that there’s an urgency to get stuff done either way before a football game,” Wasserman said. “But I also think this team is good enough with the staff that they have to try to get prepared to win that football game. I’d be surprised if something happened this weekend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard something by Wednesday.”
