Les Miles dropped by CBS Sports Radio on Thursday to discuss numerous topics, including Joe Burrow, LSU, and the NCAA’s new redshirt rule, which allows players to play four games without burning their redshirt – or a year of eligibility.

But as we’ve seen with former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant, won’t this rule create something similar to collegiate free agency?

“It is collegiate free agency,” Miles said on Tiki and Tierney. “That’s exactly what it is. But it’s going to happen – and it has happened well before this at the quarterback spot because only one quarterback gets the snaps.”

That is why Joe Burrow elected to leave Ohio State this offseason. After sitting behind J.T. Barrett for three years, Burrow, a graduate student, did not want to sit behind Dwayne Haskins. Burrow, by the way, is the main reason why LSU (5-0) is unbeaten and ranked fifth in the AP Poll.

“Joe is a (former) Mr. Ohio player and a guy that, frankly, can step in and make a difference on this team,” Miles said. “He’s a guy that can throw it. To have him behind those guys at Ohio State would have been a waste. For me, I would love to see Joe in the position that he’s in because it’s going to make a difference in his career.”

LSU is always among the most talented teams in the country, but quarterback play – or lack thereof – has been an issue in recent years.

“It’s really been the Achilles’ heel, if you will,” said Miles, who coached at LSU from 2005-16. “We needed a guy like Joe Burrow to step in and make some of the plays that he’s made for this team. I think when you look back and you see Matt Flynn, the year we won the national championship, what a great quarterback there. He had a very quality backup in Ryan Perrilloux. So we were two very, very good quarterbacks deep with the opportunity to play for the title.”

That was in January 2008. LSU has been hit or miss at the quarterback spot ever since – mostly miss.

“We had Zach Mettenberger and when we did, we were prolific,” Miles said. “But it’s based on the personnel that you have. Joe Burrow is exactly what free agency is designed for. Here’s a guy who was Mr. Ohio and in a backup position at Ohio State, so he transfers and now he’s lighting it up for (LSU). It’s going to make a difference in his career.”

LSU plays at No. 22 Florida (4-1) this Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET.
