In August, former Panthers receiver Kelvin Benjamin took shots at Cam Newton, saying that Newton was an inaccurate passer, lacked knowledge, and didn't understand ball placement.

Those are harsh words for a former NFL MVP, no?

“I follow Carolina very close, and Cam Newton is a physical marvel,” former NFL quarterback Jake Delhomme said on Taz & The Moose. “He does things that other quarterbacks can’t do. Would I love to see him be a 65-percent-completion guy? Absolutely. I guess that’s the whole beef maybe Kelvin had – and no telling if there’s something off the field that we were’t quite aware of. But Cam is a lightning rod. We all get it. All the antics after a first down, a touchdown and things of that nature – but the guy’s a hell of a football player. He’s a physical freak. He’s done some good things.”

Like leading Carolina to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015. The last two years, however, have been up and down: 6-10 in 2016 and 11-5 in 2017.

“This is a crucial year for Cam because there’s some questions about him,” Delhomme said. “Being the MVP a few years ago, the play has somewhat plateaued, so to speak. But now with Norv Turner, they’ve given him a lot more weapons offensively. I am a little worried about the offensive line and depth. They’re going through a significant injury situation right now and obviously Greg Olsen getting hurt. But just watching him play against Dallas the other day, guys bounce off of him. Most quarterbacks can’t do that. He just brings a different skill set than we have ever, ever seen at that position.”

Newton finished 17-of-26 for 161 yards and ran 13 times for 58 yards and a score in Carolina’s 16-8 win over Dallas in Week 1. The Panthers (1-0) play the Falcons (0-1) in Atlanta this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
