LeBron James would like to go down as the greatest basketball player of all time.

Well, former NBA player Damon Stoudamire believes James already is the greatest basketball player of all time, and if James leads the Lakers to an NBA title – or just the NBA Finals – then that distinction will be beyond dispute, he said.

“I think that for me, LeBron doesn’t have to . . . do any more for me to put him at the top of the heap,” Stoudamire said on Reiter Than You. “But I think that what he does with L.A., if he can take them to a title or even gets them to a Finals, he probably cements his legacy.”

Stoudamire, 44, was the seventh overall pick in 1995. His first three NBA seasons all ended the same way: with Michael Jordan winning a championship.

“As a Jordan fan, it pains me a little bit,” Stoudamire said. “Not that I don’t think LeBron is a great player, but you grow up on somebody. But it probably cements (James) as the greatest player to play this game.”

Stoudamire, the 1996 Rookie of the Year, also offered advice to this year’s rookie crop.

“You got to be willing to let your coach put you in uncomfortable situations,” he said. “You got to be willing to let them do that early on in practice. You really do. Because it’s a totally different game. From an offensive standpoint, the spacing is different. The playmaking is different. And from a defensive standpoint, you tend to struggle because you’re out there on an island. You got to learn how to play position defense because in today’s basketball it’s pretty hard to be a dominant defender. So you got to learn how to play position defense. You got to be willing to be coachable, and you got to be willing to let your coaching staff put you in uncomfortable positions so you can learn all these things.”
