The Carolina Panthers signed safety Eric Reid on Thursday. Why is this significant? Because Reid, a former first-round pick, was the first player to protest alongside Colin Kaepernick in 2016.

Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson is happy to have Reid in the fold.

“Everybody knows Eric Reid is a great safety,” Thompson said on Taz & The Moose. “I’m glad that (the franchise) stepped up and wanted to sign the guy and got it done. I’m excited to have him. I think he’s going to help us a lot on the back end.”

The Panthers rank 14th in the league in pass defense, and Reid, a 26-year-old free agent, was too good to ignore.

Thompson was surprised it took this long for Reid to find a team.

“I was definitely surprised,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of teams, probably including us, that needed some safeties. But teams wouldn’t budge because of what he believed in. I’m glad the organization believed in him. We’ll have his back. He’s one of our brothers now.”

The Panthers, who are on a bye this week, host the Giants (1-2) in Week 5 at 1 p.m. ET.
